Somebody's Waiting
By Lorie

She stood by the window watching the night sky.
The moon wasn't full but shown brightly as it danced
with the stars on this clear night. It was Halloween,
the night when those long gone walked the earth
again. She rested her forehead on the windowpane and
sighed. There was only one who was gone she wanted to
see again. She held his picture to her chest as if to
feel his presence again. "Oh, Eric! I miss you so
much." She whispered to the photo. It was her
favorite. He was leaning over his drum kit with such
a sexy look in his eyes. It made her happy Bruce used
it on the cover of the "Rockology" CD. She knew he
would have used the same picture.
She sat the picture down on the table and walked
over to her stereo and put the CD in the player. She
needed to hear his voice. As his singing filled the
room, she began to cry, again. She shook her head,
"You've got to stop this girl. He's gone." Still, she
felt guilty. There were so many things left unsaid.
She tried to tell him as he laid in a coma those last
few weeks of his life but she didn't know if he heard
her.
He was getting better. He was supposed to have
his whole life ahead of him. Forty-one is too young
to die. He had such a good heart and that's what she
loved most about him. He was so sweet and kind. It's
true when they say the good die young.
Her favorite song was starting. Eric's love song
drifted in the air. In the song he sang of his love
for his princess, his Tiara. She listened for a
moment. For some reason the song seemed different,
like there was another voice singing along. She
checked the settings on the stereo. No, everything
was okay. It was probably her imagination.
She walked over to her full length mirror and
looked at her reflection. As she wiped the tears from
her face, she saw something out of the corner of her
eye. She focused on it and couldn't believe what she
was seeing. It was Eric standing by the window
looking at her and singing. She rubbed eyes and
looked again. He was still there. She slowly turned
around and saw him smiling at her.
"Hi, baby. It's me. Don't be scared." He slowly
walked toward her as he talked. He looked as perfect
as he did in her picture. He reached out and caressed
her face. His touch was cool and felt like
electricity on her skin. She held his hand next to
her cheek and looked into his eyes confused. "I've
been given one night, tonight, to be with you. You've
been so sad and I wanted to make you feel better."
She could feel the tears stream down her face,
"Eric." He reached out and pulled her in his arms,
"Don't cry, baby, please. No more tears." She clung
to him, never wanting to let go. He was solid but he
felt cool to the touch and there was a tingle of
electricity where ever she touched him. She raised
her head up and placed her hand on his chest. The
strong heartbeat she loved to feel under her palm
when she slept with him wasn't there. He placed his
hand on hers and pulled it away.
He reached down and picked her up and carried
her to the bed. She didn't remember pulling the
covers down but he laid her down and pulled the
blanket over them as he laid down next to her. As he
held her he told her he did hear everything she told
him. He was grateful for how she stayed with him as
he laid in the coma, talking to him and holding his
hand. "I wanted to do so much more but the damage had
been done. If I would have woke up, I would have been
a vegetable. You know I hate vegetables." She laughed
at his joke. It felt good having him there, holding
her and stroking her hair and face.
"Eric, I'm sorry. I just can't let go. You were
so perfect for me." She tried to say everything she
wanted to but kept tripping over her words. Finally
he laid a finger on her lips, silencing her, "I know,
baby, I know. But you have a long life ahead of you.
There is someone close to you who loves you as much
as I do. He's just too shy to do anything about it. I
think you know who I'm talking about." She did. It
was Bruce. Ever since his divorce, he's been spending
a lot of time with her. Eric smiled then became
serious, "But you have to let go of me. I'll always
be watching you but I want you to live life. It's too
precious to waste mourning for me. I love you and I
know you love me but I'm gone now. I'm not suffering
anymore. Please let me go." She looked him in eyes,
"It won't be easy." He smiled at her, "Give Bruce a
chance. Soon you'll be laughing again."
He looked at the window, "I have to go. Remember
I love you and I'll be watching." He leaned down and
kissed her softly on the lips. He got out of the bed
and walked toward the window. He turned to face her
and smiled. In a flash of light and glitter he was
gone. She sat up in the bed and looked at the window
for the longest time.
She reached over to her nightstand and grabbed
the phone. She dialed the number from memory and
hoped he was still up. When he answered she could
tell he was and that he was alone. "Bruce, It's me. I
was wondering would you like to go out to breakfast
tomorrow?"
